My short story takes place in the near future (so that no one will deny its plausibility), in an ambiguous setting. The reason for this is that I do not want to single out any one location as a more probable setting for this story than any other. However, I will write the story so that there are some detail that can be determined about the location of the story. The main character lives in a small isolated village of around 100 inhabitants. On the outskirts of the village sits a very creepy chemical plant that automatically inspires feelings of “this does not belong here” in most of those who see it. Leading out of the village is a dark road that passes through a thick wood over a bridge. Set into the side of a hill by the stream is the house where my devil-character lives. The main character lives alone in a house in the middle of the town, and works in a city about twenty miles away. On the day the story takes place, it rains unceasingly from dawn to dusk, and flooding roads cause the main character to be unable to leave the town, beginning the story’s plot.
In my short story, the devil takes on a form similar to both the form in Paradise Lost and that of the modern consensus, (i.e. “Sympathy for the Devil”). Tas goal is, as it is in Paradise Lost (and sometimes in the Bible) to corrupt humanity. Ta tries to accomplish this goal through many diverse methods, and takes on many forms. Ta can take on the form of a human, and is very convincing in tas emulations. In order to be more realistic, ta can create completely different personalities for tas different forms. However, these constructed personalities dissipate in times of stress, and tas true self appears. (This is the only way the main character is able to figure out who exactly he is dealing with.) However, unlike the devil in Paradise Lost, my character will not be nearly as powerful, and although I will reveal that the reason for this is that tas work in the main character’s hometown is only one of several “projects” ta is working on, and thus ta is not able to concentrate much energy on the main character. However, the main character will still find tam a formidable opponent and rebuffing tam to be difficult.
